So we went to Babies R Us last night because even though we took the crib apart and put it back together, and it is improved but not right. While the drop side now raises and lowers, there is a problem. When raised, if you shake the crib at all, the side drops down suddenly and forcefully! We emailed the crib company on Tuesday evening, but haven't heard back yet.
Anyway, we checked out the 3 different BRU floor samples of our crib (3 different colors). It seems ours is, in fact, defected. When we looked at the pins on the floor models, they looked completely different than ours (much longer and thus farther into the drop sides). Aha! The root of our problems!
We talked to the very nice James who was shocked to hear that the floor models (which he said "get abused") worked so much better than our brand new crib. As we looked at the floor models together with him and explained our situation, he assessed that ours has a defect. We now have to disassemble our crib, again, and bring it back. We'll get a new one. Hooray! We should have the new one assembled in no time as we are nows pros.
